This time, as a guest in #takeaction podcast is Jitte Sjösäter, a co-founder of Spher app — an app that aims to make women feel safer. This is how their story began:
“Our story began with Hanna. Hanna was a young girl from
a small town in Germany. Tragically, following a night out with friends, she decided to leave and walk the short distance home alone and just 8 hours later she was found dead in a ditch. This story, along with many others is why we came to the realisation that something was fundamentally broken in society. …
This year (2021) is the ten-year anniversary of my coming out of the closet as queer when I was in university. This was a really difficult formative time in life, as I come from a traditional Catholic family who have been percolating in the political misinformation of the American Rust Belt since the local steel plants closed in the 1980s. Like many women of my ethnicity, I matured early, and this attracted the attention of men much older than me starting at the age of 13. …
In our society today, our bookshelves are filled with self-help books that aim to help us become the best version of ourselves, which sometimes means making drastic changes in our lives to try and find fulfillment. But what if we changed our way of thinking and started to believe that we are good enough just as we already are? In #takeaction podcast, Jessi Christian, a certified life coach, talks about her approach to self love coaching, which starts from acceptance.
Jessi started her coaching with classical life coaching, but is nowadays a self-love coach. She believes that a starting point…
We Encourage has launched AINO, a conversational tool for victims of domestic violence. AINO is already in use and constantly developed in Finland. But we are not going to stop there — we are on a mission to take AINO to Tanzania to help victims of domestic violence. Such a big project is not to be done alone, and that is why we are partnering with several amazing parties in this project.
What Exactly Will We Do?
We want AINO to bring psychosocial support to victims of domestic violence in Tanzania. In addition to that, we want to establish a…
In #takeaction podcast, Bernard Kusi discusses his interest towards changing the perceptions generally held about women and what career they are fit for. When the COVID-pandemic hit the globe, it took its toll on many sectors. The most affected have been pink-collar sectors, those with women employees in the majority. This fact made Bernard wonder about the role of women in the working life in general. He now encourages men to see women as partners, not as a threat. Listen to the podcast to hear this thoughts about changing attitudes and empowering women:
Sexual harassment is a common phenomenon worldwide. Although men are also victims of sexual harassment, the majority of victims are women. The good news is that in today’s world, movements like #MeToo has put a spotlight on sexual harassment. The bad news is that sexual harassment is still extremely common and can have grave consequences to the victim. We Encourage interviewed Ellimari Kortman from Hyvinpitely for this article.
What is sexual harassment?
Sexual harassment is defined by the UN as follows:
My husband had a lot of stress, we all felt it at the time. I thought he was depressed and I wanted to help. I tried to cope by making adjustments. I started to work more so he could work less. I did the household chores after my work so he could relax more. When there was Sports on the TV, I took the children upstairs so he could watch quietly. Despite all this, he kept getting angry and upset. He yelled more and more and my son was beaten regularly in front of his little sister. He used to…
Em has a women’s studies degree and she has presented at the (US) National Women’s Studies Association on rape culture and masculinity. She has also studied male identities as a driver of authoritarianism in US politics. These things she has really been passionate about personally and politically for well over a decade.
Em has been subject to violence in her relationship, and she has been sexually assaulted by men. Gender based violence is way too common and too many victims are being silenced.
“If my story raises consciousness and gets people talking, then that’s what I’m trying to do.” Em Seikkanen
